Summer Tactics

Its the start of August here and looking back we had excellent water albeit cloudy at times which should have meant good catches. Mike and Arthurs trip in late July saw fish around and at times in quantity as I worked on the steps there were at times significant fish runs showing in Dead Tree. As has been mentioned before the unusual 3 month drought stopped our normal runs and meant the pools in the lower beats were holding only a few fish. Salmon and sea trout like company and as a result fresh run fish were hurtling up the system and the North and South seems to have had sport. To be fair they both had fish on and often in unusual circumstances with one fish nearly beaching itself in pursuit of the fly!
Danny and friends really flogged the waters but to no avail sadly with only one fish on for Decca which parted company. There used to be an expression called ‘taking short’ and its definitely the case that for whatever reason this season fish are not connecting well and its most frustrating.
Down To The Backing
Neil W and friends did well on Day One with two fish and plenty running through! We thought here we go!! It was the perfect river ….

Mint !

Sadly things just didnt live up to expectations although Barry N ventured out when the rods had left on Wednesday night and accounted for a lovely one that had only just escaped the jaws of either a seal or dolphin!

A born survivor !

at least that is August off to a good start well done Barry.
Remember pick your times in Summer !!
